Literature Text

For you on your birthday,
        I bought a diamond ring.
I asked you to be my bride,
To you, my heart did sing.

We wed a year ago today,
And to you I pledged my life.
With the placing of the rings,
We left as man and wife.

A love of truer nature,
        Never could come true.
Even with my knowing this,
        I can't hold onto you.

I went into a flower shop,
And baught a rose of red.
I tried to live in happiness,
But soon was filled with dread.

I thought about the day gone by,
        As fatigue onto me crept.
I laid the rose upon your grave,
        Knelt, and softly wept.
I wrote this when I was much younger. Somewhere around 1990, can't remember the exact date off the top of my head. Not sure if this is technically fixed form, but it certainly isn't free verse.
